Everything you need for a Jagannath Puri yatra: official temple entry rules, Mahaprasad at Ananda Bazar, the Rath Yatra 2027 date, Konark, Chilika and a five-day plan.
By Teerthayan • October 2026
A Jagannath Puri yatra centres on darshan of Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra at the Shree Jagannatha Temple in Puri, Odisha, followed by Mahaprasad at Ananda Bazar. Most pilgrims also visit the Sun Temple at Konark and Chilika Lake, which together need four to five days. Only Hindus are allowed inside the temple, phones and leather items are not permitted, and the best weather is from October to February. Rath Yatra in 2027 falls in early July. Here is how to plan the whole trip.
The Shree Jagannatha Temple
Puri is one of the four Char Dham of India, and the temple is the heart of the town. The main deities are carved from neem wood, and the temple kitchen is said to be among the largest in the country. Darshan takes place in the main sanctum; inside the complex, devotees also visit Maa Bimala and Maa Lakshmi. The approach is along Bada Danda, the Grand Road that becomes the Rath Yatra route each year.
Darshan rules: who can enter and what to leave behind
These points come from the Shree Jagannatha Temple Administration's own FAQs and do's and don'ts:
- Entry: The temple states that only Hindus are allowed inside.
- Items not allowed: Footwear, leather items, umbrellas, mobile phones and other electronic gadgets. Deposit them before entering.
- Conduct: Bathe and wear clean clothes, follow the queue system, keep silence inside, and do not carry cooked food or consume intoxicants.
- Anavasara: After Snana Purnima in Jyeshtha, public darshan of the main deities pauses for about 15 days. Many devotees visit Alarnath Temple at Brahmagiri during this period.
The temple administration has also introduced a modest dress code; traditional Indian clothing is the safest choice, and shorts, sleeveless tops and torn jeans should be avoided. Watch for pickpockets and monkeys in crowded areas.
Mahaprasad and Ananda Bazar
Mahaprasad is food cooked in the temple kitchen in earthen pots over wood fires and first offered to Lord Jagannath. It is then sold at Ananda Bazar, the open market inside the temple complex, where devotees sit and eat together. Rice, dal, vegetable dishes and sweets are typical. Mahaprasad is considered so pure that caste and status are traditionally set aside while sharing it. Availability depends on the day's temple rituals, so it is best to go around midday.
Rath Yatra 2027
Rath Yatra is held on Ashadha Shukla Dwitiya, the second day of the bright fortnight of Ashadha. Published calendars place Rath Yatra 2027 on Monday, 5 July 2027. The deities ride three huge wooden chariots along Bada Danda to the Gundicha Temple, stay there for about nine days, and return in the Bahuda Yatra. Confirm the final date with the temple administration closer to the time, and book hotels well in advance; Puri is extremely crowded during the festival, and the weather is hot, humid and rainy.
Beyond the temple: Puri's sacred circuit
Gundicha Temple, Narendra Tank, Lokanath Temple, Markandeya Tank and the beach at Swargadwar make up a short local circuit. Raghurajpur, a heritage crafts village near Puri, is home to Pattachitra painters whose art is closely tied to the Jagannath tradition.
Konark Sun Temple
Konark lies about 35 km from Puri along the coastal marine drive. The 13th-century Sun Temple, built as a giant stone chariot with twelve pairs of carved wheels, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is no longer an active place of worship, so photography is allowed. Chandrabhaga Beach and Ramachandi Temple are on the same road.
Chilika Lake
Chilika is a large brackish-water lagoon south of Puri. From Satapada, motorboats head towards the sea mouth, where Irrawaddy dolphins are sometimes seen. Sightings are never guaranteed, and boats operate only when weather and local authorities allow. Winter also brings migratory birds to other parts of the lake.

October to February is the most pleasant period, with cooler days and calm seas. March to June is hot and humid. July to September brings monsoon rain, but also Rath Yatra, the year's biggest festival. Coastal Odisha can see cyclone alerts in the post-monsoon months, so follow official weather advisories.
