Kumbh Mela 2027 Haridwar in a Nutshell
The Kumbh Mela in Haridwar runs from 14 January to 20 April 2027 on the Ganga, with ten main snan days. The three Amrit Snans are 6 March, 8 March and 14 April 2027, at Brahma Kund, Har Ki Pauri. It is officially an Ardh Kumbh. Pilgrims stay in hotels near Har Ki Pauri, ashrams, homestays, or a Kumbh Mela camp in Haridwar's tent sites.
- Dates: 14 January – 20 April 2027 (97 days)
- Amrit Snan (Shahi Snan): 6 March (Mahashivratri), 8 March and 14 April 2027
- Main ghat: Brahma Kund at Har Ki Pauri
- Kumbh camps: Bairagi Camp, Neel Dhara, Daksh Dweep (Kankhal) and Rishikesh; Swiss cottage tents from ₹12,500 to ₹19,500 a night plus GST
- Getting there: Jolly Grant Airport, Dehradun (about 35 km); Haridwar Junction by train; about 220 km by road from Delhi
The devas and asuras churned the ocean, the kalash of amrit came up, and a few drops spilled at four spots on the way: Haridwar, Prayagraj, Ujjain and Nashik. The Kumbh has rotated between them ever since. People believe a dip in the Ganga at this time clears your sins and takes you a step towards moksha. That's why some come. Others are fulfilling a promise to a parent, and a fair number just want to see it once in their lives.
Officially, Kumbh Mela 2027 Haridwar is the Ardh Kumbh Mela Haridwar, the "half" Kumbh six years after the 2021 Purna Kumbh. Uttarakhand, though, is planning for a full-size crowd. New ghats, pontoon bridges, bigger parking at the edges of town, a police set-up only for the mela.
Online you'll also see it called the Mahakumbh Mela Haridwar. Strictly, "Maha" is Prayagraj's word. After the record crowds there in 2025, people seem to have started using it for whatever big Kumbh comes next, and for North India, that's this one.
One more thing. What used to be the Shahi Snan is now officially called the Amrit Snan, from 2027 onwards. Only the name changed. The procession still goes to Brahma Kund and families still sit on the steps from 2 am.
History of the Kumbh Mela in Haridwar: Past and Next Years
Haridwar holds a Purna (full) Kumbh roughly every 12 years and an Ardh (half) Kumbh in between, about six years later. The timing comes from the stars, not the calendar: Haridwar's Kumbh falls when Jupiter is in Kumbh rashi (Aquarius) and the Sun enters Mesh (Aries). That is also where the mela gets its name.
| Year | Type | Note |
|---|---|---|
| 1998 | Purna Kumbh | |
| 2004 | Ardh Kumbh | |
| 2010 | Purna Kumbh | 14 January to 28 April |
| 2016 | Ardh Kumbh | |
| 2021 | Purna Kumbh | A year early: the planetary position came in 2021, not 2022. Cut to April because of Covid |
| 2027 | Ardh Kumbh | 14 January to 20 April, the one this guide covers |
| 2033 | Purna Kumbh | Expected next full Kumbh |
The other three Kumbh cities run on their own cycles. Prayagraj held the Maha Kumbh in 2025, Nashik–Trimbakeshwar's Simhastha is due in 2027 alongside Haridwar's, and Ujjain's Simhastha follows in 2028.
More Than a Dip: What Haridwar Kumbh Mela 2027 Feels Like
Talk to someone who's been to a Haridwar Kumbh and they'll usually skip the bath and tell you about an evening instead. Haridwar Kumbh Mela 2027 goes on for nearly four months, which means a lot of evenings. The aarti at Har Ki Pauri, those little leaf boats with diyas drifting off down the river, kirtan from some pandal you can't see that carries on past midnight. And somewhere a sadhu sitting by his dhuni, completely unbothered by the tourist pointing a phone at him.

If your dates line up you might catch a Peshwai, when one of the Akharas makes its formal entry into the city. It's loud. Elephants, horses, a full brass band, flags everywhere. Mansa Devi and Chandi Devi by ropeway are worth doing if your knees are okay. And on the days when the main ghats feel like too much, get up early and go to Kankhal, near Daksh Mahadev.
People are guessing at 8 to 10 crore visitors over the whole of Haridwar Kumbh Mela 2027. We don't think anyone really knows. We do know December is too late to start looking for a room.
The Akhara Procession to Brahma Kund
If you see nothing else, see this. Early on an Amrit Snan morning the 13 Akharas walk to Har Ki Pauri one by one, in an order the Akhil Bharatiya Akhara Parishad decides. The Naga sadhus are usually at the front, ash on their bodies. Behind them the Mahamandaleshwars ride on decorated chariots with their followers chanting. Brahma Kund opens to the public only when the last Akhara has bathed, and that can be hours later, so find a side ghat or a friendly rooftop and be patient.
Kumbh Mela 2027 Dates: Start, Finish and Duration
The Kumbh Mela 2027 dates came out after Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami's meeting with the Akhil Bharatiya Akhara Parishad. It opens on Makar Sankranti, 14 January 2027, and closes on Chaitra Purnima, 20 April 2027, so 97 days with ten main bathing days. Three of the ten are Amrit Snan, and those three Kumbh Mela 2027 dates are what most families build the trip around.
There's a practical reason to pin down the Kumbh Mela 2027 dates now rather than later. IRCTC opens bookings roughly two months ahead, most offices want leave requests before that, and hotel rates in Haridwar inch up week after week from about November. We've taken the dates in the table from the Mela administration's own bathing calendar.
All Ten Snan Dates
Trains, rooms and leave all hang off these dates, so start here.
| Date | Day | Occasion | Type |
|---|---|---|---|
| 14 January 2027 | Thursday | Makar Sankranti | Opening Snan |
| 6 February 2027 | Saturday | Mauni Amavasya | Major Snan |
| 11 February 2027 | Thursday | Basant Panchami | Major Snan |
| 20 February 2027 | Saturday | Magh Purnima | Major Snan |
| 6 March 2027 | Saturday | Mahashivratri | Amrit Snan (1st) |
| 8 March 2027 | Monday | Phalgun Amavasya | Amrit Snan (2nd) |
| 7 April 2027 | Wednesday | Nav Samvatsar | Major Snan |
| 14 April 2027 | Wednesday | Mesh Sankranti / Baisakhi | Amrit Snan (3rd) |
| 15 April 2027 | Thursday | Ram Navami | Major Snan |
| 20 April 2027 | Tuesday | Chaitra Purnima | Closing Snan |
These are the dates the Akharas and the mela administration fixed in April 2026 (reported by The Week). You may see 20 April described as a fourth Amrit Snan on some sites; the official list has three. Do check the official notice about a week before you travel.
Which date suits you depends mostly on who's coming along. For the Akharas and the full spectacle it has to be an Amrit Snan, crowd and all. With grandparents or a small child we'd lean towards February or April. The calmest option is a plain weekday between two snans, when the mela is running but you can still move. If your snan dates are in January, bring real winter clothes, the wind off the river at 5 am cuts right through a light jacket.
The Three Big Mornings: Amrit (Shahi) Snan Dates
The three Shahi Snans, officially called Amrit Snans now:
- 6 March 2027, Mahashivratri. First of the three and likely the most crowded day of the mela.
- 8 March 2027, Phalgun Amavasya. Just two days after, which is why so many people stay on.
- 14 April 2027, Mesh Sankranti, also Baisakhi, when the sun enters Aries.
On these three mornings Har Ki Pauri is closed off for the Akharas while the procession is on, and vehicles get stopped at the city limits. You'll be walking several kilometres, there's no way around that. Pick a room you can walk to a ghat from and plan to reach Haridwar the day before.
The first two are only 48 hours apart, so if you book 5 to 8 March you can do both without rushing. In April a lot of families add Ram Navami on the 15th to the third Amrit Snan and make a short yatra of it.
Kumbh Mela 2027 Accommodation: What to Know Before You Book
We'll be blunt. Accommodation is where most Kumbh trips go wrong, because Haridwar runs out of rooms. That's why we book stays together with our Haridwar partner, Pulp Hotels: four Kumbh camp sites, 10 hotels, 5 ashrams and 5 homestays, all handled by one Kumbh desk.
Before you pay anything, the desk confirms the property, its walking distance to Har Ki Pauri and the rate for your exact dates. You pay at the property, not online.
About money. Rooms get pricier the closer you get to each Amrit Snan, and it's not a small jump. Booking three or four months early usually works out cheaper. We also book for groups, satsang mandalis, temple committees, and the classic family trip where 22 people have said yes and three are "still seeing". Whatever happens, rooms close to the ghats go first. If sleeping near Brahma Kund matters to you, book that before you book anything else.

The Basics of a Comfortable Kumbh Room
A good stay in Kumbh Mela doesn't need much. A short walk to the river, clean drinking water, a heavy razai in January, and a host who can tell you tonight which road the police are shutting tomorrow. We have hotels, dharamshalas, homestays and tents in Har Ki Pauri, Kankhal, Bhupatwala and inside the mela sectors.
Short Trip or Kalpvas?
How long to stay really comes down to why you're going. A quick snan trip is often just one night. Kalpvasis stay for weeks, and every season a few guests tack a yoga retreat in Haridwar on to their snan. Most families we book settle on two or three nights, and satsang groups tend to stay a week.
Steps From the Main Ghat
This is the first thing everyone asks for. A room near Har Ki Pauri puts Brahma Kund, the aarti and the Akhara processions a few minutes from your door, which is exactly why these rooms go first for every Amrit Snan. Treat them as the first accommodation to book.
Calmer Ghats Downstream
If crowds make you anxious, look downstream instead, around Vishnu Ghat, Subhash Ghat or the Kankhal ghats. It's the same Ganga with a lot more space to stand. For older parents this is often the honest answer.
Low-Cost Rooms and Dorms
On a tight budget with a big group, a budget stay through us usually means clean rooms, dorm beds or a dharamshala. Basic but decent, and you can walk to the mela. If there are four of you, a homestay sometimes comes out cheaper than two hotel rooms.
Home Food and Local Hosts: Homestay in Haridwar
Some families just don't want a hotel. A homestay in Haridwar means staying with a local family, usually in Kankhal, Bhupatwala or the gallis behind Har Ki Pauri. You eat what they're eating, parathas one day, poha the next, kadhi-chawal if you're lucky, and they'll know which ghat is quieter long before you would. It also costs less than most hotels. Houses usually have two or three guest rooms at most, so they fill early; for an Amrit Snan, book the homestay before you book your train.
The Silent Bath on 6 February
Mauni Amavasya falls on 6 February 2027. People bathe in complete silence that morning, and it's one of the most crowded days of the whole season. Get to Haridwar on the 5th, sleep early, be at the water before it's light.
Being There on 14 January
The mela opens on 14 January 2027. Arrive for Makar Sankranti and you're there for the very first snan, with kites over the ghats and the whole thing just getting started.
Hotels in Kumbh Mela Haridwar 2027
When guests ask us for a hotel, it's usually because they want to be near the ghat, or they need something easy for elderly parents, or they're watching the budget. For the 2027 mela, which many people still call the Ardh Kumbh, we book hotels through the Pulp Hotels Kumbh desk. It is listing 10 hotels in Haridwar, from budget rooms to luxury, plus 5 ashrams and 5 homestays.
Tell us your snan date and group size and you get a shortlist with each hotel's walking distance to the ghat and its rate for those nights. Good hotels within walking distance of Har Ki Pauri are limited, so ask early. You can also see the Kumbh hotels, ashrams and homestays on our partner's site.
Luxury Hotels in Haridwar
Senior citizens, families with little children and NRI guests usually want a lift, room heaters and a proper vegetarian restaurant, and these are the hotels for them. Many book a hotel near Har Ki Pauri for the snan night and spend the rest of the trip in a camp.
Hotels near Har Ki Pauri, Haridwar
From the Har Ki Pauri, Upper Road and Bara Bazaar area it's a few minutes on foot to Brahma Kund. On snan days, when no vehicles are allowed in, that matters more than anything else you book.
Hotels near the Ganga
If you'd rather wake up to the river, look at Bhupatwala, Kharkhari and Kankhal, 2 to 5 km from Har Ki Pauri, where many rooms have a balcony or terrace above the water.
Kumbh Mela Camp in Haridwar: Where to Stay in a Tent
Visiting the mela and living in it feel very different, and a tent is how you get the second. Mornings start with shankh and temple bells, the river's a short walk away, and on most nights somebody a couple of tents down is singing bhajans. The camps we book with Pulp Hotels open for Makar Sankranti on 14 January 2027 and stay up until the last snan on 20 April, so they cover every snan date.
Where the Kumbh Camps Are
| Camp site | Where it is | Suits |
|---|---|---|
| Bairagi Camp, Haridwar | The main Kumbh tent city, where the akharas and Kalpvasis settle | Being in the thick of the mela; long stays |
| Neel Dhara, Haridwar | Across the Ganga from Har Ki Pauri, below Chandi Devi, about 1–2 km away | Walking to the Amrit Snan; quieter nights |
| Daksh Dweep, Kankhal | By Daksh Mahadev temple, the new ghats and the Kumbh parking | Families arriving by car; calmer ghats |
| Rishikesh | Near Triveni Ghat, at the northern end of the Kumbh corridor | Combining the snan with yoga and ashrams |
Luxury Camps in Kumbh Mela Haridwar: Three Tent Types
All three are Swiss cottage tents with an attached bathroom and hot water. The Deluxe is the simplest, the Luxury has a four-poster bed, and the Royal stands on a wooden deck. Across the four camps, tents run from ₹12,500 to ₹19,500 a night plus 18% GST, depending on the site and tent. Every camp serves sattvic vegetarian meals and drinking water, has 24-hour security, and helps you get to the ghat on snan days. Puja can be arranged on request.
Luxury Camp Booking for Kumbh Mela Haridwar
Send your snan date, group size and preferred tent type. The desk allots the camp site nearest the ghats for your dates and quotes the rate before you pay; payment is at the camp. Rates go up sharply around Makar Sankranti, Mauni Amavasya and the three Amrit Snans, and those dates fill first. See the Kumbh camps and tents on our partner's site.
All-Inclusive Camp Stays
A few guests want to plan absolutely nothing. For them we can put the camp, a guide for the walk to the ghat on your snan morning, a puja and a day in Rishikesh into one quote.
Pandits and Rituals: Puja and Karm Kand in Kumbh Mela Haridwar
For many families the puja matters as much as the dip. Teerthayan arranges local pandits who perform these rituals on Haridwar's ghats. Most requests are for Ganga Snan Sankalp, Ganga Pujan, Pind Daan, Shraddh and Tarpan, and on Mahashivratri, Rudrabhishek. We also get asked for Narayan Bali, Tripindi Shraddh, havan, Satyanarayan Katha and Grah Shanti, and some families like to float a Deep Daan during the evening aarti.
Send us the date and the ritual and we'll fix the pandit, samagri and muhurat. You can add it to your room booking so everything is ready when you arrive.
Morning Practice by the Ganga: Yoga Retreat in Haridwar
People were coming to Haridwar to practise long before yoga turned into a mall business. Patanjali Yogpeeth and Shantikunj are both here, the older ashrams in Kankhal and Bhupatwala still ring a bell for the morning class, and Rishikesh is only 25 km up the road. So a yoga retreat in Haridwar slots easily into a Kumbh trip, and quite a few of our guests stay on for a week of practice after their snan.
Planning a Retreat Around Your Snan
Choose your snan date first, then add five, seven or ten days at an ashram or retreat house away from the noise, with a trip to the ghat on the morning you've picked. For people who want both peace and the mela, it's a much calmer base than a hotel in the bazaar.
The day has a simple shape. A bell around 5, pranayama, then a slow hatha class facing the river. Breakfast. Late morning there's a session on yoga philosophy or a chapter of the Gita, and the afternoon is free for the mela. Evening aarti, ten minutes of sitting, an early dinner, lights out by 9. The food is satvik and most kitchens leave out onion and garlic.
You don't have to be flexible or experienced. Groups are small and the teachers adjust for beginners and older guests, just mention a bad back or knee when you book.
Who Gets the Most Out of It?
The retreat suits people who want the Kumbh, but maybe not twelve hours a day of it. We get couples, women travelling alone, groups of old college friends, NRI families, and people who've practised at home for years and want to try it where it started. It's also gentle enough for older parents because there's a lot of rest built into the day. Some guests do the retreat first and move to a hotel near Har Ki Pauri for the snan itself.
A Kumbh Trip Planned Around Your Dates
If you'd rather not plan every detail, we put the room, meals, transfers and rituals into one quote, built around your snan date. These are the trips families ask for most:
- Amrit Snan trip: two or three nights close to the water, a guide for the walk to the bathing point and Ganga Pujan on your snan morning.
- Family trip: three or four nights with the two ropeway temples, local sightseeing and the evening aarti.
- Haridwar and Rishikesh: two nights for the dip, then a quieter few days upriver with yoga and ashram visits.
- Kalpvas: seven nights or more, a plain room, daily satsang, satvik food and a pandit for the daily puja.
Send us your dates, budget and group size and we'll come back with an itemised quote. Groups of fifteen or more, ask about a group rate. You can also browse all our yatra packages.
Help on the Ground
On all the snan dates the administration normally runs medical camps, khoya-paya (lost and found) centres, drinking water points, changing rooms and water police at the main ghats, plus shuttle buses in from the outer parking. If you booked with us and get stuck, call or WhatsApp us.
Area Guide: Where to Stay for Kumbh Mela 2027
If you're still not sure which part of town to pick, this table should help:
| Area | Good for | Distance to Har Ki Pauri |
|---|---|---|
| Har Ki Pauri / Bara Bazaar | Amrit Snan days, aarti | 0–1 km |
| Bhupatwala / Kharkhari | Hotels with Ganga views | 2–4 km |
| Kankhal | Quiet ghats, ashrams | 3–5 km |
| Mela camp area | Tents, satsang | Depends on the sector |
| Jwalapur / Shivalik Nagar | Budget rooms, easy parking | 5–8 km |
| Rishikesh | Longer trips, yoga | 25 km |
On the three Amrit Snans there's really one answer to where to stay, and that's somewhere you can walk to a ghat from, because cars won't get anywhere close. Regular snan days give you more room to choose. Kankhal, Bhupatwala, even Rishikesh all work, and so does a homestay in the town's older colonies.
When Dadi or Nanaji is coming, the question turns into which stay means the least walking. We usually suggest Bhupatwala or Kankhal with a vehicle pass, or one of the few places near Har Ki Pauri with a lift. A ground-floor homestay is another easy option for elders. Budget groups tend to get the best rates in Jwalapur or the tent sectors. Still stuck? Send us your dates and we'll tell you straight.
Road, Rail or Air: How to Reach Haridwar for Kumbh Mela 2027
- By air. Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun is the nearest, about 35 km out, usually an hour in a taxi. During the mela, allow more.
- By train. Haridwar Junction is on the main line, with direct trains from Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Varanasi and more. Railways normally add Kumbh specials. Book the day bookings open.
- By road. Roughly 220 km from Delhi, mostly on the Delhi–Meerut Expressway and NH-334. UTC and private buses run all day and night.
On snan days cars are parked on the outskirts and shuttle buses bring people into town. However you travel, keep a few hours spare for diversions and have your booking confirmation on your phone, because the police do check.
From the south or the west, most people fly to Dehradun, or to Delhi and carry on from there. The Shatabdi and Jan Shatabdi are the comfortable way between Delhi and Haridwar, roughly four and a half hours. For an Amrit Snan, arrive the night before. Our guide to reaching the Kumbh has more on trains and flights.
Kumbh Mela 2027 Travel Guide: Lessons From Past Melas
After a few Kumbhs you notice people making the same mistakes. Here they are, the way we'd tell a cousin.
- Book early. Rooms near Har Ki Pauri for the Amrit Snan days go months in advance.
- January and February mornings by the Ganga can drop to around 5°C, so pack for that.
- Carry your Aadhaar or passport. Hotels need it, and some checkpoints ask for it.
- In the water, keep a hand on the chain. The steps are slippery and the Ganga pulls harder than it looks from the top. Listen to the jal police.
- Before you walk into a crowd, agree on a place to regroup, a temple gate maybe, or the clock tower. Families get separated at every Kumbh.
- Travel light, the walking adds up fast. If people ignore one line here, it's that one.
- Check the official mela updates the night before, as routes can change at short notice.
What Goes in the Bag
In winter you'll want a thermal, a shawl, socks and a woollen cap, because the dip is freezing and the walk back is worse. From March, light cottons and a cap for the sun are enough. In any month, carry one dry change for after the bath, a thin towel, closed shoes for walking plus cheap chappals for the ghat, your daily medicines, some plasters and a charged power bank. Save a photo of your ID and booking on your phone; checkpoints ask for it. Our pilgrimage packing list has the full checklist.
Rishikesh, Neelkanth and Nearby Trips
On a free day, go up to Rishikesh for Laxman Jhula, an ashram or two and the evening aarti at Triveni Ghat. With a car, the road up to Neelkanth Mahadev is one of the prettiest drives around. If you need a total break from people, Rajaji National Park starts just outside the city. Most hotels we work with can arrange a car for these. Or skip the sightseeing and spend the spare days on a short yoga retreat. Heading into the hills after the Kumbh? Our Char Dham Yatra from Haridwar starts from the same town.
We'll update this guide whenever the administration puts out new route or pass details, so bookmark it and look again before you leave.
Why Travel With Teerthayan
Stays are booked through our partner Pulp Hotels' Kumbh desk, which confirms the property, its walking distance to Har Ki Pauri and the rate for your dates before you pay, and you pay at the property. Pujas, transfers and a yoga stay can be added to the same booking. If your plans change, a call or a WhatsApp is all it takes.
To book, send us your snan date, group size and the room or tent you want. We confirm, then sort out transport, pujas and local help.
