Everything to know before the Kinnaur Kailash Yatra: registration, medical checks, the trek from Tangling to the Shivling and a seven-day plan from Shimla.
By Teerthayan • October 2026
The Kinnaur Kailash Yatra is a high-altitude trek in Kinnaur district, Himachal Pradesh, to the Kinnaur Kailash Shivling, a natural rock pillar about 79 feet tall that is worshipped as Lord Shiva. The trek starts at Tangling village near Kalpa and climbs past Ganesh Park and Parvati Kund to well above 4,500 m. It is open for only a short window in late July and August, registration with the district administration is compulsory, and it is one of the toughest pilgrim treks in India. Here is what to expect on the Kinnaur Kailash Yatra and how to prepare for it.
What is Kinnaur Kailash?
Kinnaur Kailash is a mountain massif above the Sutlej valley, rising above 6,000 m. It is one of the five Panch Kailash peaks, with Kailash Mansarovar, Adi Kailash, Manimahesh Kailash and Shrikhand Mahadev. Local belief holds that this was a winter seat of Lord Shiva, and that Goddess Parvati created the small glacial lake below the Shivling, now called Parvati Kund. The mountain is sacred to both Hindu and Buddhist Kinnauris, and the villages around Kalpa are a mix of temples and monasteries.
The Shivling itself is a tall, slender rock on a ridge. It is said to change colour through the day as the light moves, and it can be seen from Kalpa on a clear morning.
Kinnaur Kailash Yatra dates and registration
The Kinnaur district administration announces the yatra dates every summer after a route safety review, and registration is mandatory for every pilgrim. In 2026, the yatra was held from 30 July to 10 August, with a daily limit on pilgrims split between online slots, offline registration at Tangling and slots through local tour operators. The 2027 dates have not been announced yet; check the Kinnaur district website from June onwards.
- Medical fitness certificate. This was compulsory in 2026. You can bring one from a registered medical officer or get checked at the medical camp at Tangling.
- Daily quota. The number of pilgrims allowed each day is small, so offline slots fill quickly on the first days.
- Identity proof. Keep an original photo ID with you throughout the trek.
- Weather. The administration can stop the yatra at any time if rain or snow makes the route unsafe.
Route and distances
The usual approach is by road from Shimla along the Sutlej valley, through Narkanda and Rampur, to Sarahan and then Kalpa. Shimla is the nearest major railhead (on the narrow-gauge line from Kalka) and Shimla's Jubbarhatti airport has limited flights, so many pilgrims start from Chandigarh and drive up to Shimla.
| Stage | Distance | How |
|---|---|---|
| Shimla to Sarahan | about 180 km | Road, around 7 hours |
| Sarahan to Kalpa | about 110 km | Road, 4-5 hours via Recong Peo |
| Kalpa to Tangling | about 15 km | Road |
| Tangling to Ganesh Park | about 6-7 km | Trek, through forest and meadow |
| Ganesh Park to Parvati Kund base | about 7 km | Trek, rocky and exposed |
| Parvati Kund to the Shivling viewpoint | short, steep climb | Trek, on darshan day |
How hard is the trek?
Very hard. The first day from Tangling climbs steeply with little flat ground. After Ganesh Park the trail leaves the trees and turns into boulders and loose scree, and the air thins quickly above 4,000 m. The final climb to the Shivling involves scrambling over rock. Pilgrims should be fit, used to long walks, and willing to turn back if the weather or their health says so. It is not suitable for people with heart or lung conditions, and the administration's medical check exists for a reason.
A seven-day plan with Teerthayan
The Shri Kinnaur Kailash Yatra package is 6 Nights / 7 Days from Shimla, priced at ₹ 24,500. It goes slowly enough to adjust to the altitude:
- Shimla to Sarahan, with darshan at the Bhimakali Temple.
- Sarahan to Kalpa, with views of the Kinnaur Kailash range, Kalpa monastery and Narayan-Nagini temple.
- Drive to Tangling, registration formalities, trek to Ganesh Park and stay in tents.
- Trek to the base camp near Parvati Kund.
- Darshan day: Parvati Kund and the Shivling viewpoint, then back to base camp.
- Trek down through Ganesh Park to Tangling and drive to Kalpa.
- Return drive to Shimla.
Included are six nights of accommodation (Sarahan, two nights in Kalpa, one tented night at Ganesh Park and two at Parvati Kund), daily breakfast and dinner, private AC road transfers from Shimla to Shimla, yatra registration assistance at Tangling, a trained trek guide and support staff, tents with basic bedding, basic first aid on the trek, toll, parking and driver charges, and 24×7 travel assistance. GST is extra.
Sarahan and the Bhimakali Temple
The first night at Sarahan is more than a halt. The Bhimakali Temple, the family deity temple of the old Bushahr rulers, is built in the Kath-Kuni style of layered wood and stone, with tiered slate roofs and carved balconies. It is counted among the Shakti Peethas, and its mix of Hindu and Buddhist styles reflects the culture of upper Kinnaur. If you want to cover more Devi temples in the state, see our Himachal Panch Shakti Peeth Yatra.
Best time and weather
Kinnaur lies largely in the rain shadow, so it gets less monsoon rain than Shimla or Chamba, but the drive along the Sutlej can still be hit by landslides in July and August. On the trek, days are sunny and strong, and nights at Parvati Kund drop below freezing. Snow can fall at the top even during the yatra window.
What to carry

Kinnaur Kailash Yatra tips

- Drink plenty of water and avoid alcohol and smoking on the route.
- Walk with the group and stay on the marked path. Never trek after dark.
