The shrine of Mata Vaishno Devi sits high in the Trikuta hills above Katra in Jammu and Kashmir. There are two main ways to reach the Bhawan: the Vaishno Devi trek of roughly 12 to 13 km from Katra, or the Vaishno Devi helicopter from Katra to Sanjichhat, followed by a walk of about 2.5 km.
Both lead to the same darshan. The right choice depends on your fitness, your budget, how much time you have, and how much you want the traditional walk to be part of the yatra.
The Vaishno Devi Trek from Katra
Starting near Banganga, the traditional route climbs through Charan Paduka and Ardhkuwari to the Bhawan. It is paved and lit, and pilgrims walk it day and night. Most people take somewhere between five and eight hours to walk up, depending on fitness, crowds and rest stops.
You do not have to walk every step. Ponies, palkis and pithus (porters) are available along the route, and battery cars run on part of it. Check current availability when you arrive, especially in peak season.
Why pilgrims choose the trek
It is the traditional way to make the yatra, and for many devotees the walk is part of the devotion.
You pass Ardhkuwari, where many pilgrims stop for darshan at the Garbh Joon cave. The helicopter route skips it.
You do not need a separate booking beyond your yatra registration, so you can start when you are ready.

It is a long, steady climb. Walk at your own pace and rest often.
The track is very crowded during Navratri, summer holidays and long weekends.

The Helicopter to Sanjichhat
Helicopters fly from the Katra helipad to Sanjichhat, a short flight of a few minutes. From Sanjichhat the Bhawan is about 2.5 km away, which you cover on foot, by pony or by palki, so the helicopter saves most of the climb but not all of it.
Book only through the Shrine Board's official website. Seats are limited and sell out quickly in peak season, and fares are set by the Shrine Board, so check the current fare there. Fake helicopter booking websites are a common scam; do not pay anyone else for a seat.

Which Should You Choose?
Choose the trek if you are reasonably fit, want the traditional experience, and have a full day or more.
Choose the helicopter if you are travelling with elderly parents, have knee or heart problems, or have only a day in Katra. Book early and keep a backup plan.
Mix them: some pilgrims walk up and fly down, or fly up and walk down. Ponies, palkis and battery cars can also ease part of the walk.

Register first: every pilgrim needs an RFID yatra card, which you collect at Katra.
Travel light: phones, cameras and bags have to be left in the cloakroom before darshan.
Visit Bhairon Nath: many devotees consider the yatra complete only after darshan at the Bhairon temple. A ropeway runs from the Bhawan towards it.
