Kumbh Camp vs Hotel in Haridwar 2027: Which Stay Suits Your Family?

Tent, hotel, ashram or homestay? How the Kumbh stays in Haridwar compare on distance to the ghat, cost and comfort, and which one suits your family.

Where you sleep decides how your Kumbh Mela in Haridwar feels. A tent in the mela sectors puts you inside the satsang and kirtan; a hotel near Har Ki Pauri puts Brahma Kund a few minutes from your door; a homestay in Kankhal gives you home food and a quieter ghat. The mela runs from 14 January to 20 April 2027, and the right choice depends on your dates, your group and how much walking you can do. This guide compares the options side by side.

Staying in a Kumbh camp

The Kumbh camps are tent cities set up for the mela, mainly at Bairagi Camp, Neel Dhara and Daksh Dweep in Kankhal, with a few in Rishikesh. The better camps use Swiss cottage tents: a raised floor, beds, an attached bathroom and electricity. Rates for these start from about ₹12,500 and go up to about ₹19,500 a night plus GST, depending on the camp, the tent and how close your dates are to an Amrit Snan.

Choose a camp if you want to be inside the mela: morning bhajans, pravachan in the pandals, sadhus around a dhuni and the Akhara processions passing nearby. Satsang groups and Kalpvasis, who stay for weeks, often prefer camps for this reason.

Think twice if you are travelling in January or early February with elderly parents. Nights by the river can be close to freezing. Ask the camp exactly what is included: heaters, hot water, heavy razais and meals. In March and April the weather is mild and tents are comfortable.

Staying in a hotel

A hotel near Har Ki Pauri is the most practical stay for a short snan trip. On Amrit Snan mornings vehicles are stopped at the city limits and the roads to the ghat are closed for the Akhara processions, so a room within walking distance of a ghat saves you kilometres on foot. These rooms are the first to go for every Amrit Snan, and rates rise sharply as each one gets closer.

If crowds worry you, look downstream at Vishnu Ghat, Subhash Ghat or the Kankhal ghats. It is the same Ganga with far more space to stand, and for older parents it is often the honest answer.

Ashrams, homestays and dharamshalas

  • Ashrams offer simple rooms, satsang and a disciplined routine. Many have early gates and set meal times.
  • Homestays in Kankhal, Bhupatwala and the lanes behind Har Ki Pauri mean living with a local family: parathas one day, poha the next, and a host who knows which ghat is quieter. For a family of four, a homestay can cost less than two hotel rooms. Houses have only two or three guest rooms, so book early.
  • Dharamshalas and dorms are basic but decent, and suit large groups on a tight budget.

Booking tips

  • Fix your snan date first. The three Amrit Snans are 6 March, 8 March and 14 April 2027. The first two are 48 hours apart, so 5 to 8 March covers both.
  • Book three to four months ahead. It usually costs less, and rooms near the ghats go first.
  • Confirm the walking distance to the nearest ghat, not just to Har Ki Pauri, before you pay.
  • Arrive the day before an Amrit Snan. Traffic restrictions start early.
  • Ask what is included: heating, hot water, meals and airport or station pickup.

FAQs

Is a Kumbh camp better than a hotel in Haridwar?+

How much does a Kumbh camp in Haridwar cost?+

Swiss cottage tents in the Kumbh camps start from about ₹12,500 and go up to about ₹19,500 a night plus GST, depending on the camp, the tent and the dates. Rates rise sharply around the Amrit Snans.

Where are the Kumbh camps in Haridwar?+

The main camp areas are Bairagi Camp, Neel Dhara and Daksh Dweep in Kankhal, with some camps in Rishikesh. Distance to Har Ki Pauri depends on the sector.

Are Kumbh tents cold in January?+

Nights by the river in January and February can be close to freezing. Good camps provide heavy razais and heaters or hot water, but ask exactly what is included before you book. In March and April tents are comfortable.

How early should I book a stay for Haridwar Kumbh 2027?+

Three to four months ahead usually costs less. Rooms near Har Ki Pauri go first for every Amrit Snan, so book those before your train or flight.
