How the Kailash aerial darshan works: a 3-day trip from Lucknow to Nepalgunj with a charter flight to view Mount Kailash from Nepali airspace, with no trek and no Tibet permit.
By Teerthayan • October 2026
The full Kailash Mansarovar Yatra takes two weeks, Tibet permits and days at more than 5,000 m, which rules it out for many devotees. The Kailash aerial darshan is the alternative: a short charter flight from western Nepal that brings Mount Kailash into view from the aircraft window. There is no trek, no altitude stay and no Tibet permit, and the whole trip takes three days from Lucknow.
How the Kailash aerial darshan works
| Day | Plan |
|---|---|
| 1 | Lucknow → Nepalgunj by road (about 190 km, 4–5 hours) via the Rupaidiha border; evening briefing |
| 2 | Pre-dawn transfer to Nepalgunj airport; charter flight of about an hour toward the Tibetan border for darshan of Mount Kailash; back to the hotel |
| 3 | Return drive to Lucknow |
The aircraft flies along the Himalaya of western Nepal and turns at a viewing point from which Kailash is visible across the Tibetan plateau. It does not enter Chinese airspace and does not land. Seating is arranged so that as many passengers as possible get a window view.

Documents
- Indian citizens: a valid passport or Election Commission voter ID card for the Nepal border. Aadhaar and PAN are not accepted as travel documents.
- NRIs and foreign nationals: a passport and a Nepal visa.
- No Tibet permit or Chinese visa is needed.
Best season
Most departures run in the clear pre-monsoon window of April and May, when the Himalaya is most often cloud-free. Our next departure is on Akshay Tritiya 2027; the exact date is confirmed at booking. The monsoon months bring heavy cloud and are avoided.
What to expect
- Weather decides everything. Mountain flights only operate in clear visibility. If the morning is cloudy, the operator retries later the same day or the next morning. Extra nights caused by weather are normally at the traveller's cost, so travel insurance is worth having.
- The view is from a distance. Kailash is seen across the plateau, not from overhead. On a clear day its four-faced shape is unmistakable.
- Seats are limited on each charter, so book early for festival departures.
- Charge your phone and clear its storage: photos are allowed through the window.
This is the Kailash darshan that elderly parents, people with health conditions, and anyone short of leave can actually make.
