Mahakaleshwar Bhasma Aarti booking is done on the official website of the Shri Mahakaleshwar temple committee, shrimahakaleshwar.mp.gov.in. Each pass is tied to a name and a photo ID, and seats are limited. The online quota for popular dates fills soon after it opens. The aarti starts before dawn, at about 4 AM on most days, so you will be at the temple gate in the middle of the night. This guide covers what the Bhasma Aarti is, how to book it, the ID and dress rules, and how to plan your stay in Ujjain around it.

What is the Bhasma Aarti?

Mahakaleshwar in Ujjain is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Shiva, and the only one that faces south. Every morning, before the temple opens for regular darshan, priests wake Mahakal, bathe the lingam, dress it, and then offer bhasma (sacred ash) while chanting and ringing bells. No other Jyotirlinga has a ritual quite like it, and for many devotees it is the main reason to visit Ujjain. The full ritual lasts about two hours.

How to book the Bhasma Aarti online

  1. Open the official portal. Use only shrimahakaleshwar.mp.gov.in and go to the Bhasma Aarti section. Many look-alike sites use "Mahakal" in their name. Check the web address before you pay.
  2. Choose your date. The temple releases dates in advance. Weekends, Mondays, Shravan, Maha Shivaratri and long holidays fill first, so book as soon as your travel dates are fixed.
  3. Enter every devotee's details. Give each person's name exactly as it appears on the photo ID they will carry, and upload or enter the ID details the form asks for.
  4. Pay the booking fee. The temple charges a small fee per person for online passes. The portal shows the current amount at checkout.
  5. Save the pass. Download and print it, and keep a copy on your phone until you reach the locker area.

The temple committee changes the quota, the release dates and the counter rules from time to time. If online seats are full, check the portal for any limited offline or same-day quota on your date, but do not plan a trip on the hope of getting one.

Seated pass or moving darshan

A booked pass lets you sit inside for the ritual. The temple has also run a moving (chalit) darshan, where the general queue walks past and sees part of the aarti without sitting down. It is a good fallback if you cannot get a seat, but check whether it is running on your date and expect large crowds.

Rules on the day

  • Photo ID: carry the original ID you used for booking. Names are checked at the gate, and a mismatch can mean you are turned away.
  • Reporting time: pass holders are let in hours before the aarti. Follow the reporting time on your pass. In practice, most people reach the gate by about 2:30–3 AM.
  • Dress: traditional dress is expected. Men usually wear a dhoti and women a saree. Some areas near the sanctum have stricter rules, so read the instructions on your pass.
  • Phones and bags: phones, cameras and leather items are not allowed inside. Use the lockers near the entry gates.
  • Health: you will sit on the floor for a long time in the early hours. Elderly devotees should carry their medicines and eat something light before leaving the hotel.

Planning your stay in Ujjain

Because the aarti is before dawn, stay at least two nights in Ujjain. Spend the evening before resting near the temple and the morning after taking regular darshan. Here is a simple plan:

DayPlan
Day 1Arrive from Indore. Visit Harsiddhi, Kal Bhairav and Ram Ghat for the Shipra aarti. Sleep early.
Day 2Bhasma Aarti before dawn, then rest. Walk the Mahakal Lok corridor and visit Sandipani Ashram and Mangalnath.
Day 3General darshan at Mahakaleshwar if the queue allows, then drive back to Indore. Omkareshwar can be added.

Other temples in Ujjain

  • Harsiddhi Mata: a Shakti Peeth near Mahakaleshwar, known for its tall lamp pillars lit in the evening.
  • Kal Bhairav: the guardian of Ujjain, where liquor is offered to the deity.
  • Mahakal Lok: the corridor beside the temple, lined with murals and statues from Shiva stories.
  • Sandipani Ashram: where Krishna, Balarama and Sudama are said to have studied.
  • Omkareshwar: the Jyotirlinga on an island in the Narmada, about a three-hour drive away.
