Somnath and Dwarka are about 235 km apart on the Saurashtra coast. Here is the route, what to see, including Nageshwar and Bet Dwarka, and a 3 to 6 day plan.

A Somnath Dwarka yatra covers two of Gujarat's holiest coastal towns on the Saurashtra peninsula: Somnath, the first of the twelve Jyotirlingas, and Dwarka, Lord Krishna's city and one of the Char Dham. They are about 235 km apart by road, roughly five to six hours along the coast, and the trip also brings in Nageshwar Jyotirlinga and Bet Dwarka. Three days covers the essentials, while five or six days allows a relaxed pace with Porbandar, Junagadh or Gir on the way. October to February is the best season.
Somnath Jyotirlinga
Somnath stands on the shore of the Arabian Sea at Prabhas Patan, near Veraval. It is revered as the first Jyotirlinga, and its history of destruction and rebuilding makes it a symbol of faith that endures. The present temple was rebuilt after Independence. Attend at least one aarti, and spend a quiet moment on the sea-facing promenade. The Baan Stambh (arrow pillar) on the seafront carries an inscription saying there is no land in a straight line between that point and the South Pole.
Around Somnath, the Prabhas sacred circuit includes Triveni Sangam, where the Hiran, Kapila and Saraswati meet the sea; Bhalka Tirth, associated with Lord Krishna's departure from the earth; Dehotsarg; and the Gita Mandir.
Somnath light and sound show
Each evening after the aarti, a light and sound show on the temple grounds narrates Somnath's history, with the temple itself as the backdrop. It is a ticketed show, and it may be cancelled on rainy days or during the monsoon. Timings and ticket rates change, so check them at the temple counter or on the Shree Somnath Trust's official website on the day.
Dwarka and Dwarkadhish Temple
Dwarkadhish Temple, also called Jagat Mandir, rises above the Gomti river where it meets the sea. Pilgrims usually take a holy dip at Gomti Ghat and then climb to the temple for darshan of Krishna as the King of Dwarka. The flag on the shikhara is changed several times a day, a ritual many devotees wait to watch. Rukmini Devi Temple, a short drive outside town, is traditionally visited as part of the same darshan.
Bet Dwarka and Sudarshan Setu
Bet Dwarka is an island off Okha, traditionally linked with Krishna's residence. Until recently pilgrims crossed by boat. Since February 2024 the island has been connected to the mainland by Sudarshan Setu, a cable-stayed bridge about 2.32 km long, as announced by the Press Information Bureau. Its footpath is decorated with verses from the Bhagavad Gita. Vehicle access and timings on the bridge are controlled by the local administration, so plan the visit for daylight hours.
Nageshwar Jyotirlinga
Nageshwar, about 17 km from Dwarka on the road to Okha, is revered as one of the twelve Jyotirlingas and is easy to combine with Bet Dwarka on the same day. A tall seated Shiva statue marks the site. Gopi Talav is also on this route. If you are planning more Jyotirlinga darshans, see our 12 Jyotirlinga list and yatra guide.

Best time for a Somnath Dwarka yatra
October to February is ideal: cool evenings, calm seas and comfortable temple queues outside festival days. Janmashtami draws very large crowds in Dwarka, as does Mahashivratri and the month of Shravan at Somnath; book early if you are travelling then. April to June is hot and humid on the coast, and the monsoon can bring strong winds and rain that may affect the light and sound show.
How to reach
- By air: Rajkot International Airport and Jamnagar Airport are the most convenient for Dwarka; Ahmedabad has the widest choice of flights.
- By train: Dwarka and Okha stations serve Dwarka; Veraval station serves Somnath. Rajkot Junction is a major railhead for both.
- By road: A private car is the most practical way to link the coastal towns.
