The Haridwar Kumbh 2027 runs January to April, so the weather swings from cold mornings to warm afternoons. Here is what to wear for the snan and what to pack, month by month.
By Teerthayan • October 2026
The Haridwar Kumbh 2027 runs from 14 January to 20 April, which means the weather changes a great deal across the mela, from cold winter mornings near 6-7°C in January to warm spring afternoons that can touch 35°C by mid-April. Whatever date you pick for your snan, pack in layers and plan for one simple fact: you will step out of cold Ganga water into open air, so a dry change of clothes and a towel matter as much as anything else. This Haridwar Kumbh 2027 weather and packing guide goes month by month and lists what to wear and carry.
Haridwar Kumbh 2027 weather, month by month
Haridwar sits at the foot of the hills where the Ganga enters the plains, so winter mornings are genuinely cold and spring afternoons warm quickly. The Ganga itself stays cold all through the mela because it is fed by snow and hill streams. Average temperatures for the mela months look roughly like this.
| Month | Typical low | Typical high | How it feels | Main bathing days |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| January | ~6-7°C | ~19°C | Cold mornings and nights, mild afternoons | 14 Jan (Makar Sankranti) |
| February | ~9°C | ~23°C | Chilly early, pleasant by day | 6, 11, 20 Feb |
| March | ~13°C | ~29°C | Mild mornings, warm afternoons | 6 and 8 Mar (Amrit Snan) |
| April | ~18°C | ~35°C | Warm to hot; summer begins | 14 Apr (Amrit Snan), 20 Apr |
January: cold mornings and the first snan
January is the coldest stretch. Pre-dawn, when most pilgrims take their dip, the air can sit around 6-8°C, and the Ganga is colder still. You will want warm layers for the walk to the ghat and something dry and warm to put on the moment you come out of the water. Fog is common on winter mornings, so trains and roads can run late; keep buffer time.
February and March: the easiest weather
From February into March the mornings are still crisp but the days are comfortable, which many pilgrims find the most pleasant time to be at the mela. The big early-March bathing days, Mahashivratri on 6 March and the Phalguna Amavasya Amrit Snan on 8 March, fall in this mild window. A light jacket for mornings and cotton for the day is usually enough.
April: warm days and the closing snans
By April the plains are warming fast. Afternoons can reach the low-to-mid 30s°C, and the Mesh Sankranti (Baisakhi) Amrit Snan on 14 April and Chaitra Purnima on 20 April fall in this hot spell. Here the problem flips: you need sun protection, a hat and plenty of water rather than heavy warm clothes, though early mornings can still be cool.
What to wear for the snan
Bathing in the Ganga at Har Ki Pauri is in the open, among crowds, so dress for a quick, modest dip and a fast change.
- Clothes you can get wet: many women bathe in a cotton salwar-kameez or saree, many men in a dhoti or shorts. Carry a set you do not mind getting wet, and a full dry change for after.
- A quick-dry towel and a dry change of clothes in a waterproof bag, so your dry set stays dry in the crowd.
- Slip-on footwear you can carry easily; the ghat steps are wet and you will be taking shoes on and off.
- A small bag worn across the body for phone, cash and ID; keep valuables with a family member while you bathe.
- Something warm for straight after the dip in January and February; a shawl or fleece makes a big difference when you step out wet into cold air.
Packing list for the Haridwar Kumbh 2027
Pack for the month you are travelling in, and for long hours on foot in big crowds. A short checklist:
- January and February: thermals, a warm jacket or fleece, a cap and shawl, and warm socks for cold mornings.
- March and April: light cotton clothes, a sun hat, sunglasses and sunscreen; a thin layer for cool mornings.
- All months: comfortable walking shoes, a refillable water bottle, basic medicines, hand sanitiser, a power bank, and a torch for early-morning walks.
- Documents: a government photo ID for each pilgrim, plus a few printed copies; keep them in a waterproof pouch.
- For the ghats: a small lock for your bag, a cloth bag for wet clothes, and a written note of your stay address and a family contact in case you are separated in the crowd.
Cold mornings, crowds and the Ganga
Two things catch first-time pilgrims out at a winter Kumbh. The first is how cold the water and air are before sunrise, even on a day that turns warm, so dress for the dawn, not the afternoon. The second is the crowd: on the Amrit Snan days the ghats are packed, movement is slow, and families can get separated, so agree on a meeting point and keep children close. Our guide to the Har Ki Pauri Ganga Aarti explains the busiest hours at the main ghat, and the Kumbh with elderly parents and children guide has more on managing the crowd with family.
Where to stay and plan your trip
Your comfort in the cold depends a lot on where you stay: a heated hotel room feels very different from a tent on a January night. For tents, camps and hotels during the mela, see our Haridwar Kumbh Mela page, and compare the choices in Kumbh camp vs hotel in Haridwar. For how to reach and a day-by-day plan, read the Haridwar Kumbh Mela 2027 trip plan, and for a general list, see what to carry on a pilgrimage. Plan your Haridwar Kumbh 2027 weather and packing around your bathing date, and the rest of the trip falls into place.
