Panch Jyotirlinga Yatra

The Panch Jyotirlinga Yatra covers five of the twelve sacred Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva in a single seven-day circuit across Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra, beginning and ending at Indore. The five are Mahakaleshwar at Ujjain, Omkareshwar on the Narmada, Trimbakeshwar at the source of the Godavari, Bhimashankar in the Sahyadri hills, and Grishneshwar beside the Ellora caves - a route that moves from the temple-cities of the Malwa plateau down into the Western Ghats and out to the Deccan. Mahakaleshwar at Ujjain is the only Jyotirlinga of the twelve installed facing south, the Dakshinamukhi form, and it is the only one where the Bhasma Aarti is performed - the pre-dawn ritual in which the lingam is bathed in sacred ash while the sanctum is closed to all but registered devotees. The temple stands on the Shipra river in one of the seven Moksha-puris of Hindu tradition, and the Mahakal Lok corridor opened in 2022 has added a processional approach lined with panels drawn from the Shiva Purana. Ram Ghat on the Shipra, a short walk away, holds the evening aarti and is one of the bathing ghats of the Simhastha Kumbh. Omkareshwar sits on Mandhata, an island in the Narmada whose outline is traditionally read as the sacred syllable Om - the reason the Jyotirlinga carries that name. The island is circumambulated on foot by pilgrims completing the Narmada parikrama, and the Mamleshwar temple on the southern bank is worshipped together with Omkareshwar as a single Jyotirlinga in several scriptural readings. Trimbakeshwar, 28km from Nashik in the Brahmagiri hills, is unique among all twelve: the lingam here is Tri-Mukha, three-faced, representing Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh within one stone rather than Shiva alone. The Godavari - the longest river wholly within India and the river that sustains the Deccan - rises from the hill beside the temple, and the Kushavarta Kund inside the complex marks where its waters are held to emerge. The present black-stone temple is Peshwa-period work of the eighteenth century. Nashik itself is a Kumbh Mela city and the site of Panchavati, the grove of Lord Rama's exile, with the Sita Gufa and the Kalaram temple. Bhimashankar lies in the Sahyadri range above Pune, at the source of the Bhima river, inside the Bhimashankar Wildlife Sanctuary - the protected forest of the Indian giant squirrel, the state animal of Maharashtra. It is the most heavily forested setting of any Jyotirlinga on this circuit and the only one approached through a wildlife reserve. Grishneshwar, near Verul outside Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, is traditionally counted as the last of the twelve. The temple is built in red basalt with dense figural carving and was restored in the eighteenth century by Ahilyabai Holkar; the UNESCO-listed Ellora caves and the monolithic Kailasa temple stand within a kilometre of it. The circuit is paced at six nights and seven days with road transfers between sectors, several of them six to nine hours, and includes accommodation, breakfast and dinner, transport, sightseeing and 24x7 on-ground assistance.
